All About Motion Study-02

In a previous article on motion study, we discussed the concept of motion study and basic motion for sewing. Click the link to read.  Click to Read

Today, we will discuss the principle of motion study. The purpose of motion analysis is to design and improve methods that would eliminate unnecessary motion of employees and reduce the fatigue of humans, as well as increase productivity. There are three sets of rules to design and develop better motion.

A) Rules concerning the Human Body
B)Arrangement of workplace and material handling
C) Designing of tools and equipment

Let's discuss the rules that focus on the movement of the human body while the sewing process is conducted.

Figure:-01

In this picture (Figure:-01), we define the operator's body part and their "pivot point", in other words, you can say "joint point". Here, we have 5 pivot points. Our different body members will move according to their joint points.

 Figure:-02

After analysing the above pictures (Figure:-01 & Figure:-02), we understand that if we can reduce the use of the shoulder & trunk point, then productivity will be increased, and if we can increase the use of the elbow, wrist, and knuckle compared to the shoulder and trunk, then it will also help to increase productivity.

It will be possible if we arrange the cut panel within the grip of the operator.

The basic principle to get the best motion is:-

1. Both hands should start and finish their motion of the individual task at the same time whenever possible.
2. Except for the rest period, the two hands should not be idle at the same time
3. Motion should be simple and involve a minimum number of limbs.
4. Motion should be smooth and continuous. Sharp and frequent direction changes should be avoided.
5. Need to use a mechanical attachment to overcome muscular effort.
6. Rhythm is essential to the smooth and automatic performance of repetitive operations.

In the last part, we will discuss:-

B)Arrangement of workplace and material handling
C) Designing of tools and equipment

Keep an eye out for the final part.
